Critical theory in IR
To understand the basic principles and purpose of Critical Theory in general
first have a look at Robert Cox's seminal contribution to Keohane's
"Neorealism and its Critics": "Social Forces, States and World Orders:
Beyond International Relations Theory".
More specific and highly readable articles about Critical theory in IR are
provided by Ken Booth, Head of the International Politics Department in
Aberystwyth:
'Human wrongs in international relations', International Affairs, Vol 71(1),
January 1995, pp 103-26
'Security and emancipation', Review of International Studies, Vol 17(4),
October 1991, pp 313-26
'Security in Anarchy: Utopian Realism in Theory and Practice', International
Affairs, Vol 67(3), July 1991, pp 572-45
A very entertaining debate highlighting the dividing lines between
rationalist-positivist and post-postitivist approaches to IR is also
provided by the Wallace-Booth exchange:
"Truth and power, monks and technocrats: theory and practice in
international relations', William Wallace (from the LSE) , Review of
International Studies, July 1996
'Discussion: A Reply to Wallace', Review of International Studies, Vol
23(3), July 1997, pp 371-7
I attach all the articles which I could find online.
